The Indian Heritage Centre proudly presents its sixth special exhibition, Ente Veedu, My Home: Malayalees in Singapore, a heartfelt celebration of the Malayalee community’s rich history and heritage in Singapore. This event marks the third community co-curated exhibition, reflecting the tangible and intangible cultural elements that make the Malayalee community a significant part of Singapore’s diverse cultural fabric.

Spanning multiple zones, the exhibition unveils fascinating artefacts and compelling stories while offering a series of workshops, performances, and activities in collaboration with the Malayalee community. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in traditions or explore Kerala’s artistry, Ente Veedu, My Home promises an enriching experience for all ages.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

Workshops

Pookalam Workshop
Explore the vibrant tradition of Pookalam, Kerala’s floral art form that holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. This workshop will guide participants through the rich history of Pookalam, its role in festive celebrations, and the tools needed to craft one. Using fresh, colorful flowers, attendees will have the chance to design their own unique Pookalam masterpiece.

Shadow Puppet Workshop
Delve into the world of Thoolpavakuthu, Kerala’s traditional shadow puppetry. This hands-on workshop offers a unique blend of art, storytelling, and performance. Participants will design and construct their own puppets, learning the intricacies of this ancient art form.

Whether you’re a novice or experienced, this workshop provides an excellent opportunity to understand and preserve Kerala’s storytelling traditions. Participants will leave with their own hand-crafted shadow puppet and a deeper appreciation for this cultural gem.

Kathakali Workshop, Performance, and Face-painting
Experience the enchanting world of Kathakali, Kerala’s iconic dance-drama form, with Bhaskar’s Arts Academy. Children and adults will learn the basics of Kathakali, including its intricate steps, hand gestures, and expressive facial movements. The workshops will be followed by live performances and face-painting sessions that bring the art form to life.

Free Guided Tour by Nan Chiau High School Students
Take a journey through four thematic zones of the exhibition, curated in partnership with Singapore’s Malayalee community. Learn about the roots of the Malayalees, their dedication to preserving their cultural identity, and how they’ve fostered a sense of belonging in Singapore.
